PennSelect Seeds LLC is a Pennsylvania-based tomato seed company, established with the objective of commercializing tomato cultivars developed and selected for target production regions and growing environments, with an initial focus on the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast and Midwest regions. Our work centers on advancing elite fresh-market and processing tomato cultivars to market through collaboration with public breeding programs and private-sector partners, with much of our germplasm originating from the Penn State Tomato Breeding Program. The PennSelect product portfolio includes fresh-market tomato cultivars such as large rounds, plum/Roma types, and grape tomatoes, as well as processing tomato cultivars developed for the canning industry.

PennSelect Seeds is led by a team with expertise in tomato breeding and plant genetics and agricultural product commercialization. The company is co-founded by Dr. Jonathan Bonfiglio, tomato breeder and plant geneticist, and postdoctoral scholar at Penn State; Dr. Majid Foolad, Professor of Plant Genetics and leader of the Penn State Tomato Breeding Program; and Scott Welsh, who provides leadership in agricultural business management and new product development.

Many of the tomato cultivars commercialized by PennSelect originate from breeding work conducted within the Penn State Tomato Breeding Program and reflect long-term breeding objectives focused on fruit quality, deep red fruit color and increased lycopene content, disease resistance, and stable agronomic performance. Selection has been directed toward adaptation to Pennsylvania, the Midwest, and the Northeastern United States, with trials underway in the southern Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern U.S.

PennSelect works with university breeding programs, commercial growers, processors, and established partners across the tomato industry to move tomato cultivars from advanced breeding stages into commercial production through coordinated evaluation, seed scale-up, and market introduction.
